Maya's Arangetram
Bharatanatyam is regarded as the oldest Indian classical dance form. Although it is over 2000 years old, it is still highly popular worldwide. It's name is derived from the signature elements that make up the form: bhaava (expression), raaga (melody), taala (rhythm), and naatya (stagecraft).
A traditional Bharatanatyam curriculum or maargam includes studying basic postures of the hands, feet, eyes, neck, and head (hasta and bheda), movement combinations (adavu), and choreography including Pushpanjali, Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Padam, Varnam, Thillana, and more. As students develop their skills, they learn to compose and choreograph on their own. Once they have completed their initial study, students undertake a year of specialized training in preparation for their Arangetram, or solo dance debut.
Meet Maya
Maya has been learning dance since she was 4 years old. She started with ballet and Bollywood dance classes. At age 6, she began Bharatanatyam classes with her guru Shachi Phene. She took an immediate liking to the rhythmic stomping and dramatic elements of the dance form. Over the years, she has enjoyed learning the choreography as well as the stories behind the dance. Her favorite part of dance is learning new and challenging poses.
